We got our hands on the newly released Tecno Camon 15 a few weeks ago and the device, which is the latest in line of the Tecno camera-centric camon series has lived up to its expectations.
Here are some of the features I really liked about the phone:
Display
First things first, the screen is quite big making it really easy for you to consume as much media content as possible, so for all you Showmax and Netflix lovers who prefer curling up in bed to catch up on the latest in movies and series, the 6.55 inch screen does just the trick.
The device is also a bit heavier than I expected, which makes sense considering the screen but you can really feel the device in your pocket – which is either a good or not so good thing depending on who you ask.
Colours: I loved that it comes in either shoal gold, fascinating purple and jade. I got the jade which is really really pretty. It also coincidentally blends in really well with the green wall colours of our house. Hehe
Battery
The Camon 15 comes with a non-removable Li-Po 5000 mAh battery with a safe charge feature. In simple terms, no matter how much you use the phone, you cant finish the battery in a day, which is a really good thing especially in these dark times of not knowing when KPLC will shut off the power during lockdown. The safe charge ensures that the phone is disconnected/stops charging when full even when you haven’t disconnected it from the power source. It however doesn’t have a fast charge feature, which I thought would be more beneficial in this case so whatever you do, you’ll still have to wait for 2 and a half hours for it to fully charge.
Design
It has a 2.5D curved glass with the fingerprint reader at the back and all your buttons on the right. The left side is left for the SIM tray that accommodates two SIM cards and a microSD card slot for those who are confident the can fill up the 64 GB of internal storage.
I however found the fingerprint scanner too slow at times and just opted to use a PIN/password.
Camera
Being a camera centric device, Tecno decided to bless us with a quad camera at the back. The quad setup is basically a 48 MP unit with two 2 MP sensors and a fourth QVGA lens. In terms of video, the device is capable of 1080p videos at 30 frames per second. Oh and the front camera is a cool 16 MP with LCD display. With these numbers, you can easily use this device to shoot YouTube worthy content.
The Ultra Night lens also makes it easier to shoot pictures and videos at night without the unnecessary bright flash that diminishes the quality of photos. I’ll show you what I got in a separate review of the camera.
Software
The device is supported by an octa-core 2.0 GHz, MediaTek MT6763, Helio P22 (12nm) chipset which helps in delivering a hassle and lag free experience while multitasking and performing ‘heavy’ duties like playing games or editing videos. It also comes with the latest Android 10 (Q) version based on HIOS 6.0
The other really cool features I liked are the Dark mode that reduces brightness, saves battery life and just looks really good, Social Turbo which is a WhatsApp assistant – you can save the audio of WhatsApp calls, enhance and brighten the video in video chat and also create your own WhatsApp memes and Wi-Fi share that allows you to share Wi-Fi with other contacts without sharing the password
In conclusion, the Tecno Camon 15 is a really great buy especially for its retail price of Kshs 18,000.
