When Kenyan singer and songwriter Pauline Wendo aka Polaris musically crossed paths with legendary artist Prince Kaybee, she had never imagined that her voice would become known by many or that people would be singing along to her song; but isn’t that what happens when we go beyond to achieve great things?
Pauline’s musical journey starts around 2013 even though her dreams of becoming a musician were born while in high school
Starting out on her own
She says that breaking out on her own at her age wasn’t easy especially if you want to go commercial. She was in the band Kiu, an all-girl beloved musical group who met at musical school when they were all students – however, time came for Pauline to branch out on her own – but it wasn’t easy.
”Audiences and producers love young talent, so even when I decided to leave the group and make it on my own, I was filled with doubt.but the thing about doubt is if you let it rule your mind, you’ll never set out to achieve what you want so I decided to it let go.
I told myself that even though I’m in my 30s, it doesn’t mean I won’t get my big nreak.”
And the big nreak did actually come after opportunity came across her way via Twitter thanks to South Africa, award-winning musician and club DJ, Prince Kaybee
Prince Kaybee who was working on his album released a beat, put it online and challenged artists to come up with something creative. Pauline then saw her opportunity and went for gold.
After giving it her all and receiving quite a bit of love on the song, Prince Kaybee’s took notice of her talent so much do that he put it on his latest album, The 4th Republic, released on March 5, 2021.
She continues telling me how all this, as much as it’s the beginning of her big break starts by being intentional.
“When I was posting the video, I wanted to go viral that I won’t lie and even when I posted it, I didn’t just want him to see it, I was hoping for something more which I thankfully got haha.
#TwendeTukiuke
“Till this day, I still can’t believe that Safaricom wanted to include me in the #TwendeTukiuke campaign – I still can’t believe that they would find my story inspiring but here we are and there’s a billboard with me on it! I think it’s captivating how Safaricom wants to tell stories like mine – that despite what life or naysayeres might throw your way, you can always push past it to acheive your dveams.”
Pauline was also part of Muthoni Drummer Queen’s #PerformMusicIncubator, a project to which she will be working with artists to develop their individual live shows as well as their strategies for the successful release of albums or EPs ao watch out for that!
