As the world prepares to celebrate International Jazz Day on the 30th of April, Kenyan Trumpeter Christine Kamau keeps making moves and taking names. A keen collaborator and campaigner for music as a tool for propagating unity, Ms. Kamau has been invited to perform at the Lagos International Jazz Festival 2019.
Hailed as Nigeria’s Premier Jazz Festival, the event will be held on 29th to 30th April and will feature over 30 acts from Nigeria and beyond in celebration of International Jazz Day.
She has graced various stages in Africa; Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zanzibar including a notable headline performance at the Kigali Jazz Junction (Rwanda) in 2017. This will be her second performance in Nigeria, having performed at the Capital Jazz Festival, Abuja in 2016.
Christine Kamau is also the Founder of Women in Music Forums, a platform that seeks to promote women in performing arts by providing an avenue for them to showcase their stage performance skills.
Having graced various stages on the continent, Christine Kamau is steadily becoming an established name on the African Jazz Scene.
Started in 2008 by Nigerian promoter Mr. Ayoola Shadare, Lagos International Jazz Festival has featured many musicians including ASA, Courtney Pine, Freshly Ground and Jermaine Jackson. The festival also features lectures and workshops. Christine Kamau will be the first Kenyan Jazz musician to perform at the 11th edition of the festival.
