I’ve always been a fan of invigorating music; you know the kind that gets you at your worst moments but manages to sweep you off your feet? The kind that makes you dance and smile, the kind that reinvigorates your soul? That was me when I first heard the sounds of the Tin Pan Band.

Tin Pan has been able to capture the attention and imagination of audiences across the globe. Their earthly New Orleans sound is laced with gritty blues, jazz and American roots music. Originally based out of New York City, this group of talented musicians led by Jesse Selengut has built a reputation as versatile performers who bring such raw sincerity to their originals and renditions while maintaining a high level of musicianship and creativity.
Tin Pan’s energy and creativity has over the years grown a dedicated fan base and has led to many concert, tour and media appearances. The Wall Street Journal describes Tin Pan as “Really worth checking”; when Rupert Murdoch heard them play in Central Park in New York, his comment to them was “You guys are terrific!”
Tin Pan boasts of seven albums to their name and plays over 150 live performances annually, and the band is a member of Music Under New York Arts for Transit Program. Notable performances include TV appearances on The Today Show, NY1, Fox News, ABC News, ESPN as well as festival performances at the HOWL festival, the Williamsburg Jazz Festival, the MUNY Jazz Festival and The Cape Cod Jazz Festival.
Comprised of Jesse Selengut on the trumpet, piano and lead vocals, Steve Wood on vocals and acoustic bass and Pete Smith on the resophonic guitar and vocals, be sure to catch a weekend full of honest live jazz music at its best.
Jesse is no stranger to Nairobi (having played in 2008 at Mercury as “Jesse Selengut and NOIR” as a fundraising effort for the Shangilia Orphanage) but it is Tin Pan’s first time here. Starting with an appearance at TNL at J’s Fresh Kitchen (Westlands) on January 11th, Tin Pan will then proceed onto a week-long residency at the Ankole Grill in Kilimani from January 12th to 16th.
Jesse is also part-owner of Ankole Grill, which offers one of Nairobi’s suavest dining experiences; and every night will feature a fresh serving of fantastic music, and Ankole’s signature cuisine of Texas barbecue meats and Sub Saharan African classic dishes.
Tin Pan will also be recording a live album at Ankole during these performances.
On select nights, performances will include collaborative performances featuring pianist Jacob Asiyo, percussionist Kasiva Mutua, and the Nairobi Horns Project (NHP) as special guests performing alongside Tin Pan. There will be an all-out open-house Monday Jam Session.
This January, the soul-capturing sound of New Orleans is coming to Nairobi and you best not miss out!
